Kerala –God’s own country

Described as gods own country, the state of Kerela, with the Arabian Sea in the west and the towering Western ghats in the east, enjoys certain geographical features that have made it the perfect getaway for tourists all over the world.

Essentially tropical in its climactic conditions, Kerela has a shore lined with beaches, a lushness in its verdant forests that is rare to find, serene stretches of emerald backwaters, fascinating wild life, sparkling waterfalls, massive plantations and paddy fields spread over acres of fertile land, an age-old ayurvedic tradition, health spas, rich history and unique art-forms.

One of the most popular spots in Kerela is the Kovalam beach, lined with endless rows of coconut palms, a bright lighthouse in the distance on a high rock promontory, azure waters swirling in comfortable proximity and soothing sea breezes fluttering against youthe best possible location for relaxing and lying back in ease.

A unique feature of Kerela is the ketuvallom or houseboat that takes visitors on a journey past rural settings, water-lily strewn causeways, coconut grooves, fishing oats, paddy fields and decorated temples, while surrounded by all possible comforts and amenities. These traditional boathouses that are available in deluxe, luxury and ordinary categories, allow you to float on the 900 km backwater network of Kerela - covering the states of Kollam, Alleppey (alappuzha), Kottayam and Kochi ( Cochin ) – and making you forget the trials and tribulations associated with terra firma.

Kerela is also known the world over for its health spas and ayurvedic treatments. The system of ayurveda which was evolved around 600 BC is a complete health philosophy that is based on each person’s individual body humors. The beauty, tranquility and harmony that this land is suffused with, make it the best option for the pace of this healing system and people flock here for the most relaxing of massages to the curative aspects of several ailments.

In addition to the above mentioned attractions. Kerela is also famous for its rich cultural heritage. It is home to a variety of performing art forms like the Krishnanattom, Duffmuttu, Koodiyattom, Mohiniyattam and Kathakali, to name just a few; ritual forms like Patayani, Poothanumthirayum and Theyyam; and Kalaripayattu, one of the most ancient martial arts in the world. It is also a land of festivals and celebrations, one of the most popular of which is Onam, marked by its famous boat race.

For those interested in wildlife the state is home to 12 wildlife sanctuaries and two national parks that include an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, from exotic plants to reptiles, birds and animals like elephants, wild dogs, gaur, sambar, deer, wild boars, sloth bears, leopards, lion tailed macaques, Nilgiri tahrs, tigers, bison, langur, malabar giant squirrel, flying squirrels, panthers, etc.

It is said that there are some places on earth where one comes simply to lose oneself. And that is just the right description for Kerela. It is a land of a serenity so intense that existence itself takes on a whole new level of meaning. An experience that defies definition, it is life at its most beautiful, peace at its most languid and pleasure at its best.
