Tourist attractions in Kashmir

Located in the northern most tip of India, Kashmir is a land of snow-kissed mountain peaks, shimmering lakes, fruit-laden orchards, snow-fields and mountain ranges. One of the biggest attractions within Kashmir is the capital city of Srinagar, famous for its Mughul gardens, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi and the Dal Lake. The lake is known specially for its unique houseboats that provide visitors with every conceivable comfort while floating on its transparent waters. Drifting amongst the soft lapping of waves against the boat and buying wares from fruit and flower vendors as they row by on their shikaras, once again particular to this region, is an image of tranquil serenity that gives the word peace a new meaning.

Apart from Srinagar there is Pahalgaon, a destination loved for its snow-kissed landscape and the Lidder River that runs through it. Then there is Patnitop, popular with those on religious pilgrimages since it is close to Vaishno Devi temple, and therefore provides a combination of scenic beauty offset against spiritual aspirations. The city of Jammu is known for the Sheesh Mahal and the Amar Singh Palace, two more monuments of architectural and historical significance.

And then of course there is Gulmarg, known for its ‘valley of flowers’. As the term suggests, this specific site bears reference to an entire hillside that metamorphoses into a carpet of magnificent and psychedelic beauty each spring as flowers bloom and fill the air with their fragrance and splendor.

A trip to Kashmir should never be ended without an extension into Ladakh and its capital, Leh. This region is particularly popular amongst those interested in adventure, and has numerous activities like mountaineering, camping and trekking to choose from. Ladakh is also famous for the strong Buddhist influence there as can be witnessed by the presence of several monasteries and soothing chants enhancing the tranquility of the landscape.

Apart from its natural beauty, Kashmir is also famous for its traditional handicrafts and cultural heritage. It has its own dance and music forms, the most common of which are the Rouf and Wanwunn, and performance styles like the Bhand Pather. The state also offers visitors a wide array of shopping options through its own indigenous arts and crafts, most of them made by hand, that range across intricate embroidery, woodwork, paper mache, carpets, and weaves.

Visiting Kashmir is a choice that can never go wrong. From the breathtaking natural beauty that nature has bestowed on her to the warmth and hospitality of its people, from the intricacy of its handicrafts to the lusciousness of its fruit-laden orchards, Kashmir is paradise in every sense of the word – paradise discovered, paradise visited and paradise experienced.
