Golden Temple Tour, Amritsar

The Golden Temple locatd in Amritsar is belived to be the most significant shrine of Sikkhism. Officially called Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, it derives its names from its gold-coated dome or gumbaz that has a lotus petal motif in relief at the base and an inverted lotus at the top which supports the kalash at the top. The architectural style of the Temple is a beautiful amalgam of Hindu and Muslim styles and many believe that this particular specimen has led the way for what can be described as a Sikh school of architecture. The mirrored interiors of the temple are lavishly gilded and decorated with inlay work that add to the aesthetic value of the experience in addition to its spiritual relevance.

As per history, the tenth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh made the Guru Granth Sahib the eleventh and eternal guru of the Sikhs, and all Sikh gurdwaras contain the Grant Sahib as their spiritual and religious leader. Founded on a spirit of tolerance, peace and brotherhood, the Golden Temple embodies the basic ideology of Sikhism. It is accessible to all men, women and children who wish to prtake of its splendor. No Sikh temple is complete without a community kitcen or langar, and in keeping with this tradition, the Golden Temple feeds approximately 40,000 people each day, irrespective of caste, creed gender or nationality.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Amritsar experience is the tranquil music and hymns from the scripture itself, chanted reverently in the temple premises by robed priests from morning till night, filling the entire atmosphere with a trance-like sense of serenity and spirituality. All day long pilgrims and visitors immerse themselves in the sacred waters of the lake that symbolizes a cleaning of the soul. The word ‘Amritsar’ literally means “pool of ambrosial nectar", the drink of the gods, denied to mortals. This description is actually completely in sync with the energy exuded by the temple in particular and the city in general. Considering that amrit bears reference to a magical substance that creates and leads to states of enhanced consciousness and euphoric spirituality, the focus here is always on a sense of attainment of wisdom through tolerance and surrender o the divine.

For the thousands of pilgrims who make their way to the grace of the Golden Temple, each moment in its presence, each evening in the soothing energy of its proximity, each experience of its sublime gurbanis, is reason and validation enough to last for a lifetime. For all who believe in a higher power or even in just a force beyond humanity, the Golden Temple remains a place of peace and power, a place of spirituality and validation.
